REVIEW OF 'WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO BECOME'

Canadian Beats - March 25, 2024

Daniel Raymond, hailing from Oshawa, Ontario, returns with his third project, the poignant 4-track EP, What We’re Trying to Become.

The EP is a testament to Raymond’s dedication to growth, both musically and lyrically. Collaborating with new musicians and producer Jim Bryson, Raymond embarked on a journey to craft a sound that resonates with hope while retaining the raw honesty of his previous works. This collaborative effort is evident throughout the EP, with each track benefiting from Bryson’s keen musical contributions and conceptual insights.

In the first song, “The Prettiest Girl In An Ugly Town,” Daniel Raymond delves into themes of self-discovery and empowerment amidst societal pressures. With vivid storytelling and heartfelt lyrics, Daniel Raymond explores universal themes of identity and liberation. The song’s imagery of the “prettiest girl” in an “ugly town” symbolizes individuals trapped by others’ expectations, highlighting the struggle to break free from predefined roles.

In “There’s a Train,” Daniel Raymond tenderly explores love and vulnerability, urging listeners to cherish their connections. His heartfelt vocals, paired with soothing acoustic melodies, navigate the complexities of intimacy. Lyrics like “It’s getting hard being soft to tell the truth” add emotional depth, addressing the challenges of relationships. Through the symbolic imagery of a train, Raymond reminds us of life’s fleeting nature and the importance of embracing moments of connection.

Overall, What We’re Trying to Become reflects his musical growth and introspection. With compelling storytelling, intricate melodies, and rich instrumentation, Raymond demonstrates his evolution as both a songwriter and musician. Raymond has undeniably achieved his artistic vision with this release, inviting listeners to join him on a captivating musical journey.

REVIEW OF 'WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO BECOME'

Cactus Cottage - March 26, 2024

 Cactus Cottage Spotlight

Daniel Raymond and his new EP, -What We're Trying to Become-

"Everything has been figured out, except how to live."

--Jean-Paul Sartre

Did you know that existentialism can be happy, carefree, and authentic?

Existentialism is the philosophical belief that we are each responsible for creating purpose or meaning in our own lives. The theory gets a bad rap because it doesn't leave much room for faith or science, and the only certainties are the blessings and curses of death and freedom. Many people think of it more as existential nihilism, the idea that life has no intrinsic value. We speak of existential crisis and dread, and we think of phrases like, "Life is inherently meaningless."

The core beliefs of traditional existentialism are action, freedom, and decision. Philosopers discuss how and why individuals create their own reality through intentionality, authenticity, awareness, and personal growth. In music and art, an existential creator may show themes of identity-seeking, transformative and cathartic change, and the challenges of allowing genuine happiness into our lives.

Enter Daniel Raymond, from Oshawa, Canada. He's a folk musician we ran across quite by accident, and we fell hard for his breezy style and his blend of mindfulness with joy. On March 23rd, Daniel released his brand new EP. Congratulations to him!

Daniel delivers complex feelings and insight with great musical accessibility. Sometimes things are hard, and the right artistic expression of those things makes them relatable. This EP is a road trip to find our true selves, and it's happening on a beautiful sunny day in a cherry red convertible with the top down and the wind just right.

The first track, "The Prettiest Girl in an Ugly Town," appears to be gaining popularity on Spotify today. We added it to the Cactus Cottage playlist along with "Magic Show (4 pm)" that was already on. Both tunes dance around personal choices, creating identity, and the importance of being around others with the same values. "Find the Place" delves deeper into intentionality and the pleasant assurance that comes with achieving the results of hard work.

We're certain these songs would sound great with just Daniel and acoustic guitar. Adding depth, the album production by Jim Bryson cross-pollinates Paul Simon with Postal Service to give us light, catchy rhythms and powerful harmonies.

Daniel Raymond is creating his authentic self through music, and we hope you come along for the ride of his life.
